ABOUT KATE

Kate is a trauma counsellor, psychotherapist and a clinical supervisor with extensive experience working with survivors of childhood abuse, complex trauma, torture, crime, family and domestic violence, and other forms of interpersonal trauma.

Her clinical work is grounded in an integrative existential and psychoanalytic approach, bringing together contemporary trauma research with an exploration of the unconscious patterns that shape how people experience themselves, relate to others and respond to adversity. She views psychological suffering through the broader lens of the human condition, recognising that recovery requires much more that symptom reduction. It involves making sense of life’s fundamental realities, including the search for meaning, navigating one’s mortality, freedom, responsibility and existential loneliness.

Throughout her career, Kate has worked across community mental health, forensic and trauma services, supporting individuals whose lives have been profoundly affected by violence, abuse and displacement. Her work with survivors of torture, crime and childhood trauma has reinforced her belief that understanding the enduring influence of early experiences is essential to meaningful recovery.

As an author, educator and clinical supervisor, Kate is passionate about making complex psychological concepts accessible to counsellors, psychotherapists, social workers and other helping professionals. Her writing bridges research, philosophy and clinical practice through practical strategies, clinical examples and thought-provoking reflections.

Kate challenges the common belief that trauma recovery should focus only on moving forward while avoiding the past. Instead, she advocates for a compassionate, evidence-informed approach that helps practitioners understand how childhood memories continue to shape identity, relationships and emotional wellbeing throughout life.

Her work is driven by a simple belief: the stories we spend a lifetime avoiding often hold the key to understanding ourselves, and with careful exploration, can become a powerful pathway to healing.
